Project Description

The project consists of three number 4 and 5 storey office and retail buildings on a green field site in Mahon, Cork. The project is located on the Mahon link road adjacent to Mahon Point Shopping Centre.

The Building has a two storey car parking basement below ground floor.

The construction is a mixture of reinforced concrete and structural steel.

Murphy Matson O’ Sullivan are the Consulting Engineers for the development company John Cleary Developments and were involved in the project since the concept stage.

MMOS Role

The structure was tendered as a reinforced concrete flat superstructure and as a reinforced concrete down stand frame in the substructure. Post tender we carried out a revised structural design of two number blocks in conjunction with the appointed main contractor. This re-design involved revising the basement structure from an insitu concrete structure to a precast concrete structure. The superstructure of buildings Block A & B were changed to a down stand composite steel and precast structural design.

These structural changes were made primarily due to the volatility of the labour market in particular in relation to insitu concrete works. In addition to this significant savings were made in the construction programme.
